About the Engine Room Gallery

The Engine Room Gallery was founded in 1997 in East Belfast and since then has been running monthly changing shows. It provides space for local and international artists to showcase their work. With 3 floors of exhibition spaces, we host the largest gallery space in Northern Ireland. The gallery is a registered charity and relies on volunteers and art that is sold in shows (donations) to support it.

Supporting Artists Through Charity

Our gallery works with the public, schools, collages and universities, putting on workshops to enhance the art sector of NI and offers a platform for artists to exhibit their work, with a focus on supporting the local and international art community. We depend on volunteers and donations to continue our mission.

About the Engine Room Gallery

In 1996 a small group of East Belfast artists formed the East Belfast Arts Collective. Early in 1997 they were made a limited company and a registered charity and opened the Engine Room Gallery in the Portview Trade Centre on the Newtownards Road.

Find out about the history of the gallery

The Engine Room Gallery has run continuously for 27 years, the exhibitions held monthly using local Irish artist (North and South), British and international artists. We have had 5 different major galleries in various locations and are currently in the city centre on North Street.

We have in those years run nearly 600 exhibitions using 100s of artists and have within the collective a wide range of both age and talent, ranging from young artists just graduated from art college to well known artists in their 80’s, a number of academicians and 3 MBE’s.

Our gallery overlooks Belfast Cathedral, with an entrance on North Street. We are open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with free admission.
